I don’t know about your part of the country but here in central Virginia we are being spoiled with some amazing weather this week. Today, I left work and walked out into a gorgeous sunny evening complete with blue skies and a gentle breeze.

I thought it would be the perfect excuse to ditch the gym, visit the trail, and work on my speed and intervals for the upcoming Beauty and The Beast 5K I have coming up at Disney. I texted a pal earlier to chat about my feelings surrounding this year’s Princess weekend at Disney. I truly thought I would feel more disappointed about not running the ½ marathon this year but after today’s run I know I did the right thing by focusing on health and weight loss this year versus training for events. During my run tonight I had some time to reflect.

I know that I am a pretty slow runner and that tonight’s accomplishment might not seem like much to some. However, for me it was huge. I ran a solid 6 miles (and change) while keeping a 12-13 minute mile pace the entire run. I would love to one day run/walk at a 9-10 minute pace but for me today was a victory. I am not even sure how it happened exactly. I hopped off road and ran my usual loop. Instead of taking the short paved path (1/2 mile or so) back to the car I just turned around and re-ran my loop in the other direction.

I will admit that the second loop was mostly downhill as the first loop was mostly uphill. I was able to gain a lot of speed during the second loop (and confidence) and found that I continued to run at a greater speed not only downhill but also on the flat surfaces as well as the inclines. I listened to some cheesy old school jams (Ice Ice Baby, Pump Up the Jam, Can’t Touch This and other fabulous lame early 90s tunes) and sort of zoned out. If the sun hadn’t threatened to set on me I might have even attempted to do both loops a second time. It’s one of my goals for the future for sure. When I finally made it back to the car I felt incredibly tired, content, and accomplished. I can honestly say, I think, it may have been the best run I have ever been on.

I know that my co-workers, especially my very patient boss and my across the hall pal, are probably sick of hearing me sing the praises of Bikram yoga every single day but I am fully crediting those classes for my new found running ability. I used to write a lot about how my legs were willing to carry me but my breathing was “spazzy” and all over the place. I feel like I have more control over my lungs, breathing, and just my body overall. This revelation makes me so incredibly excited to continue running and practicing yoga.

After this epic (well epic for me) run I was pretty much starving. I came home and made one of the hub’s faves, cashew chicken and brown rice. I am finally settling in to finish up some school work and bond with my TIVO.

What does your weekly workout routine look like?

I thought I would torture entertain all of you living with the feet upon feet of snow with a little photo look see at my trail run/walk today. It was a clear beautiful 45 degrees and the trail was packed. I love how beautiful and blue the sky looked. Other than some super tight calves in the beginning and some toe pain near the end I could have stayed out there for hours. (Well except for that pesky sun setting thing). These little bursts of nice weather remind me there is an end to the winter in sight.

When I got home I was starving so I decided to make a dish I have been interested in trying for quite some time. My gal Rachael Ray made this on 30 Minute Meals ages ago and I thought it looked really yummy. She calls it a “Cuban Hash” since it incorporates the elements of a Cuban sandwich. You can find her recipe HERE. Due to my eating plan I made several adjustments to this super easy to make knife and fork kind of sammie.

-I started by toasting up some whole grain bread in the oven with olive oil, chopping 1 medium onion, and chopping 3 links of lean andouille sausage (none of it is super lean so just do your best).

-Next I substituted ground turkey for ground pork and heated it in a skillet with cumin, all spice, salt and pepper. After it was slightly browned I tossed in the chopped onions.

-After this cooked up I added in the sausage

-After 2-3 minutes I added 2 ½ tablespoons of tomato paste and allowed it to cook through for 1-2 minutes

-Next, I poured in ½ bottle of beer (even the cheap stuff will do) and let it cook out for 3-4 minutes before reducing the heat

-As the beer cooked out I made my “relish” which was some chopped dill pickles and yellow mustard (simple yet oh so effective)

And just like that it was time to build the knife and fork sandwich

-Use toast at the base

-Pile on a couple scoops of the meat and onions

-Add a slice of 2% Swiss cheese

-Pile on the chunky homemade relish

-Top with a fried egg (Yum!)

Bust out the knife and fork because this little guy is packed with way too much awesome goodness to pick up! It was a great filling meal, was healthy with our modifications, and is totally guy friendly! Enjoy!!

Today after my weigh in and a quick breakfast the hubs and I hit the off road trail again to get our Saturday workout in. Though we went at an overall slower pace than last weekend’s off road run we did some uphill sprints (though why I agreed to that Ill never know) and enjoyed being outside even with a temperature in the teens. I should also mention we brought along our chunky monkey pup Harlow. She normally gives up about a ½ mile in but something about the cold makes her feel all fancy and fantastic so she was hanging in there like a big dog! I am happy to report another successful run and I am feeling stronger every week. On another note, I was all bundled up in my signature color today so I am pretty sure that helped. 😉

Now to cook/bake/organize and get things set up for our movie party night!

As many of you know, I started this blog way back when to document my relationship with running. My little blog baby soon grew into something more as I struggled in 2010 to learn a healthy living lifestyle. My blog now examines all parts of this process, especially the weight loss/fitness aspect. I have proclaimed over and over again that this will be my year to emerge something better. I am developing a better diet/eating plan with the help of Weight Watchers and the “Points Plus” system. I am incorporating several different types of workouts into my plan. I seem to be on the right path so why do I keep feeling this nagging feeling in my gut? After my decision to focus on weight loss this year and not train for any major event (ie: The Princess ½) I died a little inside. While I am sticking to my decision (it is just the right thing for me right now) I also feel I need to mend my relationship with running. I realize that sounds funny but if you have ever loved to run I have no doubt you’ll understand.

Today I laced up my running shoes to go out for a run. It was not a “walking and just jog a little” run or a “run ½ way and walk the rest of the way back run” but a real “sweat like a guy and go until it hurts in a good way and then go a little further” run. In rereading some of my old blogs I realized that off road running really helped me find my running “sweet spot”. So, the hubs and I headed out to a familiar trail and, crazily enough, a familiar feeling.

It is a challenge for someone who is not at a healthy or ideal weight to run. The fact that I did what I did today amazes me. It encourages me. It, even though not a huge feat for most, makes me feel proud. I ran for 4 off road miles. I ran hills, rocky terrain, slippery terrain, bridges and even stairs. I ran it all without complaining and, most importantly, without doubting. Since my last run at Disney it has been the doubt getting in between me and my love for the run. I see that with such clarity now. Today was a new day for me. It was like starting over.

The hubs was really excited to support me and see me get “back in the ring” so to speak. He ran along behind me to snap photos of my day. He was running up hills and popping out from behind rocks like my own little paparazzi. (Does this make me more like B Spears? Please tell me it does!). It was like he knew today was something I would want to remember and I am so glad he was there. When I started to fade near the end he encouraged me to finish strong (and I did!).

I will let his photos from today tell my little running story. It might not be pretty, but it’s real. I am so thankful and happy to have this part of my workout and life back.

Today was a no plan, do whatever the day brings, sort of Sunday. Inspired by last night’s cookies I decided to add some craisins to my morning oatmeal. It is kind of amazing what the smallest change will do for a dish. My boring bowl of oatmeal suddenly felt really sweet and indulgent. The calorie/points plus value was the exact same as when I use raisins.

Next, I went out on some random errands (groceries, bill paying, etc). I ended up at Target to pick up dog food for the fur babies and I spotted these really cute bowls. I like to mix it up from time to time with what plates/bowls I use on the blog so I love finding a cute print/pattern. I am pretty sure these bowls were meant to be since I was recently watching reruns of friends where they were using oversized cups in an almost identical print. I even searched for them online with no luck! Plus these were a steal at $7.00!

After my errands were done I stopped at Macys. It had just opened for the day and happened to be on the way home. I had two $5.00 gift cards (well use them or lose them $5 credits is more accurate) with a 1-31-11 expiration. I scoped out the sale sweaters and truthfully they were so incredibly “picked over” I almost just bought some tights to use up the credits so I would not lose them and be done with it. Luckily, I spotted these gems from last summer being put back out for sale. They were 75% off with an additional 40% off and I had a 15% off coupon. That plus my two $5 credits got me these fun little summer pieces for $0.03. True Story!

Once I dropped everything off at home I figured it had warmed up enough to go for a run outside. I drove downtown for a change in scenery to hit the trail. Apparently the trail did not get the memo that the snow had melted so I was faced with a frozen snowy mess. I slowed WAY down but the workout was still a good one. Not only was it a workout for my booty (trying to stay balanced) but it was also peaceful to just concentrate on what I was doing. I put U2 (my absolute favorite) on the I-Pod and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

I am now settling in at home to catch up on some TIVO (Rachael Ray has a LOT of shows during the week!) and start a chili meatloaf for dinner. What did you do this weekend?

The Disney running events have had a huge impact on my desire to get fit. Disney is where I attempted my first ½ marathon last March as well as where I completed my first ½ marathon last October. In particular, The Princess ½ Marathon weekend is something I hold near and dear to my heart. It just so happens that the Princess ½ Marathon weekend falls during our favorite time to visit Disney (late Feb/early March) so it makes sense, with me being a lover of all things Disney and all things Princess, that I would participate.

This year is all about fitness and weight loss for me. I am going to concentrate on truly learning what is right for my body and getting back to my “happy weight” versus concentrating on training for distance and adding something more to the uphill battle I have in front of me this year. With that said, I did not want to be left out of this really fun, amazingly inspiring weekend at Disney. So, I have signed up for the Royal Family 5K. This way I can still go to the expo, see my wonderful healthy living blog girls, and take Saturday morning to run through the park for a 5k! We plan to spend the rest of that day at Hollywood Studios. I feel like this is the perfect compromise until I am in a place to train for a ½ again (maybe by next year.)

I was all smiles to learn the “theme” for the Royal Family 5k this year is Beauty and the Beast! How cute is that? I am hoping I can talk my expert tutu making friend Kris into helping me make a “Princess” tutu for the run and I will definitely have my tiara on!

The course runs through Epcot which should be fun and the best part is we are working some fitness into our family vacation! My goal is to get my speed/time up enough that I can stop at least twice to snap some Princess photos. It feels good to have a “stepping stone” type of goal to reach and I cannot wait to get to Disney in February!

Have you ever run a 5k, ½ marathon, or marathon at Disney?

Here I Go Again

After the Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon I swore I would NEVER do another 1/2 marathon. I was emotionally and physically exhausted from the race and sort of fell out of love with running. Even though the outcome was a happy one, I simply felt “done” after this experience.

However, after a few weeks to reflect (and truth be told be lazy) I feel that nagging feeling that something is missing from my life. That something is running and fitness in general. While being active is so important, I know deep down it is the running I miss. I miss the feeling of pushing my boundaries, getting stronger with each outing, and feeling good about my accomplishments. So with all of these warm and fuzzy running feelings in place next week I begin my training for the Disney Princess 1/2 Marathon.

Those of you who follow the blog know the Princess 1/2 did not turn out as I had hoped last year. However, instead of going into this race with those demons haunting me I am looking at this race as “just for fun”. I am planning to follow a 10 week training schedule, run the race as best I can, and if it stops feeling fun/rewarding/beneficial on the big day I will bow out gracefully instead of getting myself all hurt like last year!

Since I have completed a 1/2 marathon I feel the pressure is off and I can just enjoy this one. To be honest I am most excited about getting back into a disciplined routine.  I will only be breaking my schedule for a 4 day trip to New York next week.  I am going to spend the next month getting back in shape, hopefully re-losing the pounds I have gained 😦 to get back to my lowest weight loss as seen HERE and then start the new year fresh. At that point I will begin the weekly weight segments, photo updates, and monthly recaps that I have been so excited about including on the blog.

For now, I am getting myself geared up for my running schedule. A new shoe fitting might be in order as I ended up with bloody toes after the Wine and Dine 1/2. What style running shoes do you use? I am also looking for some warm running gear, new I-pod jams, and just a touch of tenacity.

While I know the journey is a difficult one, you cannot replace the feeling you get from giving 100%. The pavement and I may have been on a break all Ross and Rachael style but we are getting back together.. Im going to get back out there and Run In Pink!!

Even though I had rested for most of the day I was still somewhat tired going into the night race. The hubs assured me my excitement would get me through it. So, after stocking my armpocket with gummy bears we headed to Epcot.

All racers not being transported to and from the hotels by Disney had to park at Epcot in an attempt for less congestion/traffic at ESPN Wide World of Sports (which does not have the vast amount of parking Epcot does). It also would make it easier for racers and their loved ones to leave following the after party. The hubs and I took a photo for luck and he walked me to the busses.

I was sad the hubs was unable to run with me, especially since I had been counting on seeing his face at mile 5 where I would have been picking him up. I absently checked again for my email granting me permission to run his leg. I had gotten that permission when I thought I would be running with him. Later, it seemed this idea became problematic so I was glad I thought to save, print, and forward my original email. I knew I would not be eligible for any of the “full” benefits including awards (um yeah right!), an official finishing time (I would have my tag clipped at mile 5), online tracking, or the full medal. As long as I got my relay medal (which I was assured I would) I really did not care about anything else other than finishing. I was completely fine with all of the stipulations and actually started feeling excited and hopeful as we pulled into the Wide World of Sports.

With just under 11,000 runners the lawn at ESPN was crazy! There were runners everywhere, a really fun DJ, and they even brought out Chef Mickey and Minne. Thankfully, I was near the front when this happened so I was able to snag a photo with Minnie before the line got too long.

I realized I was getting a little worn out and punch drunk from the dancing and excitement so I found a patch of grass to sit down on, listen to the music, and stretch. It barely seemed like any time had passed at all before I was headed to the port-o-potty (the ickest part of racing in my opinion) and to my starting corral.

Once I was in my corral I decided to sit down again. Everyone was jittery and it was making me nervous. Plus you can burn a lot of nervous energy in 45 minutes. I happily ate my gummy bears and tried to get ready to race. I saw a lot of people around me that were all shapes and sizes, some doing relay and some doing the ½. This made me happy. As someone who definitely does not have a “runners body” (not even close) it felt nice to see other people giving the Disney races a try!

At 10 minutes until go time I stood up, stretched a little more, and started to get in my mental “sweet spot” for running. I was already tired and I knew this was going to be rough. Plus, if I am being honest I must admit I was scared. I did not want to fail. I said a little prayer (which I always tend to do right before a race) and then I felt ready to give it my best shot. A few moments later they released the wheelchair athletes and then came our countdown and (my fave) the fireworks.

The first mile was chaotic and confusing as it always is. Without a wave start (meaning they started all corrals at once) there were pretty much people everywhere. People were walking, running, jogging, doing intervals, etc. No one was really going at the same pace other than the super fast peeps who were long gone. The first mile always makes me jittery but in between miles 2-3 things seemed to even out. Somewhere in the first couple of miles we ran out of Wide World of Sports and I thought it was really fun to run so close to the ginormous red ESPN sign. That might have been my favorite part.

I did not take any photos on the course. It was dark and I was too nervous to concentrate on photos. I made a mistake on this course in that I was very overzealous in the beginning and I felt myself starting to waiver as early as mile 4!! I ate some gummy bears, found a much slower pace, and went on my way. Luckily, the next few miles would be a great pick-me-up. I had never been to Animal Kingdom so I was looking all around and trying to soak everything in as I went through. Sadly, my dream of running with lions was dashed as I did not see a single animal on my run through the park. 😉

After Animal Kingdom is where I would have picked up the hubs. My timer was clipped and I was sent on my way. I did not even have to bust out my email. The next part of the run was in Hollywood Studios, which was also fun. Running in the parks is by far the coolest thing about a Disney race.

At this point I started feeling like I was going to throw up. I had not brought my own water/Gatorade, which was a huge mistake. I needed more sips than there were stops on the course. I found myself feeling really sick in between water stops.

I was really tired, walking a lot, and shaking by this point. I had not eaten enough pre-race and will bring my peanut butter with me next time. But, I was almost finished which was a good thing since the guys on the bikes (you know the ones) were buzzing all around. I became paranoid about being swept right at the end so I tried to get my speed up. This was a terrible idea and I actually 1. yelled in pain 2. started to tear up 3. resolved myself that this might not happen for me.

I kept going at my walk/jog pace for what seemed like an eternity and a girl on the sideline told me “you have just a little over a quarter of a mile to go”. I teared up again. I was so excited to be finishing and just to be done. I wish I could say I finished super strong but in reality I walk/jogged across the finish line (for relay-ers) and got my medal. I know I was not the last person to finish. There were at least 2 girls behind me, possibly more but I know I was one of the “back of the pack” finishers. That was ok with me. I remembered the saying “ Dead Last trumps Did not Finish which greatly trumps Did not have the courage to start”. Even though it wasn’t the strongest finish  I still felt like I had won the Olympics.

I started texting friends right away and then I realized I felt like I was going to be sick. I took my refreshment bag and sipped on powerade while I inhaled a banana chocolate chip muffin. Immediately after this I had some water and a piece of hard candy. I felt myself returning to normal.

Right away I set off to find the hubs who was waiting for me in front of “the ball” at Epcot. I slowly made my way over to him and realized he looked almost as tired as I felt.

Epcot was packed and we had to wait in line forever for our tastes and sips. The idea was a lot of fun and I ended the night with a fantastic (and much deserved) piece of baklava. YUM! The hubs and I headed back to the hotel for much overdue sleep.

I cried in the car on the way back to the hotel. I told my husband I did not think I had what it took to go through that again. After talking with Andrea, Casie, and some work pals I felt better knowing my reaction was completely normal and would fade away.

I am now more excited than ever to start training for the Princess ½ marathon. I don’t feel like I have anything to prove this go around so I will be running for fun. The experience, and not the finishing, will be my goal. Plus, the princess ½ trip will be our long Disney vacation for the year. I don’t want to spend it overly sore, sad, or disappointed. I will run in my tiara until I just don’t want to run anymore or I hit that 13.1 whichever comes first. 😉

Overall, I learned a lot during this race and feel I will be better prepared when the Princess ½ rolls around in February. Now if we can just talk the hubs into running it again…..

We did some sleeping in on Saturday (race day!) and then it was off for breakfast. I was really unsure how to fuel for the day so I decided on a large breakfast followed by small easy to digest meals throughout the day. The hubs and I had heard good things about KeKe’s Breakfast Café so that is where we headed to get our late morning meal.

I had been craving waffles so I ordered a Belgium waffle with fresh cream and fruit. I made it ½ way through the waffle (cream was a terrible idea it turns out) and ¾ way through the fruit.

After breakfast the hubs and I headed over to the outlets for some light shopping. The hubs posted on his twitter that we made it through the shopping with “minimal damage” so everyone left happy.

My one indulgent purchase was a pink patent leather COACH bag that I just could not leave behind. Plus it was an additional 50% off the sale price. Score!

We spent the rest of the day resting up for the race. I had water and Gatorade throughout the day and the hubs watched lame movies on the flat screen. Finally, I sent the hubs out to Panrea Bread for my pre-race meal of peanut butter and jelly on wheat.

I could barely believe the moment I had been waiting for so long for was finally arriving. I got dressed in my running gear, checked to make sure my I-pod was charged, stuffed a copy of my email (the one granting me permission to run the hub’s leg of the race) in my armpocket and I was ready to go!

Next Up….The Race Recap 🙂

Today I officially started to taper with my mileage. This is one of the nicest and most nerve wrecking parts of the training process. It is nice because you know until the big event you will not have a run that consists of over 5 miles. It is unnerving because your mind keeps telling you it would be “better” to keep up that high mileage until the race. However, pretty much every training plan on the planet tapers for at least the last 2 weeks before an event so here we are. I did learn some interesting things on my run today.

  1. I need to re-vamp my running play-list ASAP. This is a high priority before race time!
  2. Forgetting to take water on even a shorter run will still cause muscle cramps (silly me!)
  3. People are odd. I heard a mom tell her toddler that organic milk was “dirty” and it had germs in it. Ahem.
