Maybe it was being overtired, maybe it was feeling completely inspired to change everything I have been doing dysfunctionally for so long, maybe it was being stuck at a 35 lb loss for months with no change (and suddenly realizing I’ve been doing a lot of things wrong), or maybe it was being around so many people who seemed to have it all figured out but I had a little breakdown in my room after the day’s sessions were said and done. I cried (sobbed a little if I’m honest) and kind of purged all of those negative feelings I have been carrying with me for so long. It really did feel like moving on. So I was able to put back on my happy face and enjoy the rest of my night.

So even though I was feeling a little weird I decided that some Core Fusion Yoga (sponsored by Subway) was just the thing I needed. A group of us headed out to Exhale Fitness Spa in Chicago where I took my first ever “real” yoga class. I wasn’t great at it. This was a lof different than doing a video in my living room but I loved it. The energy was great. Our instructor was fabulous. We got brand new yoga mats (mine now lives with my HLS roomie Andrea since it wouldn’t fit in my luggage). An awesome workout was just what I needed after my day. I will ignore the fact that my abs were sore for days after. I would do it again in a second! (All following yoga photos are from Hangry Pants as I had no camera with me).

Day two ended at Karen On Green, a vegan place in Chicago. Everyone headed up to the bar area and I ordered my dinner. To be fair, I think if I had been down at a table in the air-conditioning with room to sit my bowl and eat my dinner I might have enjoyed it. However, crammed up in a zillion degree bar area with a rude waiter and I wasn’t that into it. I will just leave it as-It was an experience.

We finally headed back for some very overdue rest. Tomorrow’s recap:  A day of pure fabulousness on Michigan Avenue!

3:30 am is really early (or late) depending on how you look at it yet I was up, in the process of getting dressed, and headed in Chicago for my first ever visit to the “windy city” (which as it turns out, isn’t so windy).

I normally don’t eat or drink before early morning flights so the Lynchburg, VA to Charlotte. NC and Charlotte, NC to Chicago, IL back-to-back flights were pretty miserable. (At least those parts where I wasn’t sleeping were).  But, I was in Chicago bright an early, found my ground transportation, and headed into the city.

Chicago was bustling and crowded at 9:30am and I found myself getting really antsy in the car. I texted back and forth with my roommate for the weekend, Andrea. We had never met in real life of course but had been communicating non-stop in the weeks leading up to the Healthy Living Summit (HLS). I was pretty jazzed to meet her and even though I had maybe the slowest driver in the history of the world we finally pulled up to the Congress Plaza Hotel on Michigan Avenue.

To say the hotel is interesting would be an understatement. The hotel is straight up creepy. It’s rumored to be one of Chicago’s most haunted hotels. Back in the day it was frequented by Al Capone, there is a supposed hidden passage in the hotel, and the hallways look like they are straight out of The Shining. Red Rum anyone?

As soon as I made it into the lobby I found Andrea right away. I didn’t know anyone who would be at HLS so I started introducing myself. Someone pointed out my “southern accent” first thing which I never thought I had. I kind of got a kick out of that because I am very “non-southern” in terms of my speech when compared to many other people in my life! I met several very cool bloggers including Lindsay, JT, Shannon, and of course my roomie. Everyone was so fun
and smart and health/fitness minded. It was kind of neat to find out what everyone did “in real life” for work and talk about our weekend plans. After some discussion we decided to meet up with Angela and several other girls to do some walking, take some photos, and have some lunch.

Chicago was hot on Friday. It’s that simple. I of course had on a black dress so I felt like I might just burst into flames at any moment. But it was my first time in Chicago so I was determined to get in some sight seeing. Chicago is a really visual city. I felt like there was something to see around every turn. (like that random eyeball or some really cool building)

We walked down to Millennium Park to check out some of the art and other cool sights.

I love the fountains right at Millennium Park. There were tons of people running through the water and playing under the fountains. The kids were loving it. The fountains reflect faces (which I hear is pretty cool at night) and the mist felt fantastic. I could not resist taking off my shoes and getting my toes wet.

After a little more sight seeing we made it to “The Bean”. The Bean is actually something called  Cloud Gate. However, it is affectionately referred to as “The Bean” which makes me laugh. I love nicknames for people and things so this was cute. It’s hard not to be fascinated by The Bean. You can take groovy photos of the city, each other, or even yourself when you are under or near The Bean. I dare you to get close to it and NOT take a photo of yourself. You totally will.

As cool as The Bean was I totally lost interest because I was starving. Luckily a couple other girls were feeling my pain so we took off and headed to lunch. We stopped at the first decently healthy option we stumbled upon which was Café Bachi. I picked up a turkey, honey, and pickle hot pressed panini, fruit salad, and juice.

Can I just say how much fun it is to eat lunch out with other food/health bloggers??? Everyone photographs their food. I love that!

After lunch we headed back to the hotel for a much needed nap. Much needed. Did I mention it was much needed? Andrea and I had been up for hours plus we had gained an extra hour with the time change so we really needed a power nap. Luckily we woke up in plenty of time to head out to LaSalle Power Company for a cocktail event hosted by Open Sky.

You know I love Open Sky (visit my store here) and they did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome. The food was great, the location was fun, and I heart free drinks (hellooo margarita).

This was technically our dinner so I grabbed a mini turkey burger, some roasted red pepper hummus, chicken skewers, salad, and a small piece of vegetarian quesadilla (not pictured). Very Yummy!

The party was a great time to meet the people whose blogs I read everyday or every week. I was super excited to meet Melissa from Crunches for Cupcakes (I felt like a stalker making sure it was her before I mosey-ed over to say hi), Leslie from And Her Little Dog Too and Caitlin from Healthy Tipping Point.

Meeting Caitlin was a really cool experience. Caitlin has written a book and is extremely successful. She was completely down to earth and very approachable. Meeting her has definitely 110% gotten me on board with the Operation Beautiful movement. It’s a great message and I can’t wait to order my copy of her book. It was also inspiring to me because (as you regular readers already know) I struggle a lot though this fitness journey/process. Having someone sort of reinforce the positives is huge! This was just the first of many inspiring moments for me throughout the weekend.

The rest of the night was fun and everyone seemed to have a great time.

After the party we took a cab back to the hotel to get some rest. The 2010 Healthy Living Summit would start bright and early. Stop by tomorrow for my tales of swag, oatmeal, core yoga fusion, a break-down, a vegan bar, a shift in  focus, and my tiny tiny computer envy.

Have A Happy And Healthy Wednesday!

My exciting news is two-fold today. First up, I made my hotel reservation and bought my plane ticket to Chicago. I am officially all set to attend the 2010 Healthy Living Summit in Chicago in August! I have never been to Chicago so I am stoked to check out some good shopping, good food, and get some great tips on diet, fitness, and blogging. I am going literally not knowing a soul there. But, it’s funny how when you regularly read someone’s blog and they yours you become “blog friends”. I think it is going to be really fun to meet these interesting and dedicated girls in “real life”. I am rooming with Andrea from Run, Eat, Date, Sleep (the first blog I ever regularly read) and I think the whole weekend is going to be a fantastic time.

My next but of exciting news (or an exciting teaser I should say) is that something really fun and exciting is coming soon to the blog! It will combine several of my favorite things so keep checking back for that!

As for the rest of my day, today was a cross training day for my Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 marathon training. I did 4 hard miles on the bike.  I am amazed at how this works almost the complete opposite muscles than running. It makes it a pretty ideal cross training activity. I was insanely hungry when I got home so the hubs and I made some organic stir fry with whole grain rice.

Tomorrow is my “Friday” so I am getting ALL geared up for some weekend fun. Be sure to stop by on Saturday and check out my “sample platter” of fitness activities! Also on the agenda: a grill out, the lake, and find out what I pick for my Saturday flex meal!

Have a Happy and Healthy Wednesday!!

Have you ever heard the expression “the devil is in the details”? I am
pretty sure whoever said that might have been talking about planning a
vacation. Don’t misunderstand, I love to plan. Planning is like my
whole grain bread and reduced calorie butter. It’s just kind of who I
am. Sometimes however, it can get overwhelming. There are so many
details involved with traveling. Plus, I am the type of person who
wants to see and do everything. Since that is impossible I find myself
doing endless research so I can make sure I don’t miss something
great. It’s tiring . Let me give you a quick little run-down of what I
am planning for the rest of 2010.

Family Vacation: We travel to SC with the hubs family in the summer. I
heart the beach and family time is always usually fabulous. I do love
spending some time with my family-in laws. ❤  Also, this is where the
hubs and I duke it out in our yearly summer putt-putt putt-off. If it
sounds lame well that’s because it is. Loser buys the winner ice cream
at Maggie Moos. 😉  (August 2010)

Healthy Living Summit: I am packing my bags and heading to Chicago for
the very first time. I am way too excited about it and fear I will
drive my roommate from Run,Eat,Date,Sleep crazy with my excessive
planning. I am trying to dial it back a little but truthfully I am so
jazzed to get there early Friday and see some of Chicago before the
breakout sessions on Saturday. Also, I am flying out on a Monday so I
will have a full day Sunday to explore the windy city. (August 2010)

Disney World: I heart all things Disney and I heart all things
running. So, why not do the Disney Wine and Dine ½ Marathon? The hubs
is running it too. We are just going for a long weekend but I have
every last minute jam crammed with Disney fun. I have to get it all in
because it will be March before we go again. Also, I have never been
during the food and wine festival so this should be pretty fantastic.
(October 2010)

Dallas: As I mentioned a few months ago we are all paid up to visit
Dallas TX for a Dallas Cowboys football game this fall. I have never
ever been to Dallas so I am beyond excited to look around the city and
find the good shopping and good dining. And there are no words for how
stinking excited I am about the game. The hubs- not so excited but
he’s a champ and I am sure he will make me regret this when he pick
our “big” vacation next summer. (November 2010)

(source)
Add in some trips to WV to see my parents, a possible white water
rafting trip, and (fingers crossed) a weekend in DC and that makes for
some serious planning and serious details. What are your vacation
plans for 2010?

Happy Friday Everyone!!  The last few days have been extra busy but I am back and ready to blog. My big news is that on Wednesday night I bought a ticket to the 2010 Healthy Living Summit being held in Chicago. Basically, this is a weekend for bloggers and nonbloggers to get together, go to workshops that promote healthy living and just have a fabulous time. Being the nerd planner I am I have already picked out which break-out sessions I want to attend. Right now it looks like I’ll be visiting

  • Fueling for Fitness: Perform Well and Recover Quickly from Your Workouts
  • The Ups and Downs of Pressing Publish: Getting Real about the Blogging Community
  • Yoga
  • Stop Staring Over Your Shoulder: How to Avoid the Self-Comparison Trap

The only choice I am torn about is between the following topics. Which one would you choose?

  1. Healthy Entertaining:Learn how to be a great hostess while maintaining your healthy lifestyle.
  2. Stepping up Your Blog Photography

I am also excited to be rooming with Andrea from Run, Eat, Date, Sleep.  I think its going to be a lot of fun meeting in “real life” all of the people whose stories I follow online. Plus Im going to Chicago. How much fun is that? Any “must vists” for the windy city?? (Remember I heart shopping, good food, shows, and all things fabulous!)

I will be back to some run/food blogging tomorrow. Bry and I have a run planned for the morning and if he’s nice I might make my low cal vanilla nutmeg french toast!!

Have a Happy and Healthy Weekend!
